We bring the swim lesson to your pool.

Chelsea Wiley teaches toddlers, children, teens and adults across the Triangle, one-on-one, at your own pool. No class schedules to work around, no crowded rec center, no waiting list. Just your water, your time, and an instructor with eighteen years behind her.

Who is getting in the water?

Teaching a two-year-old and teaching a thirty-four-year-old are not the same job. Pick the one that fits and we will start there.

Little Strides

Toddlers & children

From a first splash with a parent holding on, through floating, gliding and swimming a length on their own. Water safety is built into every level, not saved for the end.

  • Parent & toddler classes from about 6 months
  • Solo lessons once they are ready to let go
  • Two siblings can share a 45 minute lesson
  • A parent or guardian stays poolside the whole time

Open Water

Teens & adults

A lot of adults never learned, and most of them have spent years quietly avoiding the subject. There is nothing unusual about starting at thirty, or fifty. Lessons are private, at your own pool, and nobody is watching.

  • Complete beginners are welcome, including if water frightens you
  • We move at the pace you set, not a curriculum's
  • Stroke work and endurance if you already swim
  • One-on-one with Chelsea, always

Straightforward pricing

What a lesson costs

Every lesson is private. Because lessons happen at your pool, a travel fee applies based on where you are. Both numbers are shown here so nothing is a surprise at checkout.

ClassLengthLessonTravelTotal

Payment is taken in full when you request a lesson. If Chelsea finds your pool is not suitable, you are refunded in full. Two children share one 45 minute lesson at the same price as one child, so siblings effectively split the cost.

The progression

Levels, and how we place you

You do not need to pick your own level. Tell us where you are on the request form and the level gets assigned, then confirmed in the first ten minutes of the first lesson.

Finishing the final level of a track earns a Safe Strides completion certificate and a pair of goggles.

Start to finish

How booking works

Five steps, and the only one that takes any waiting is the pool check.

Pick a time and pay

Choose from the open slots, tell us about the pool and the swimmer, and pay to hold it. About three minutes.

Chelsea checks your pool

Within 48 hours she reviews depth, entry, access and safety. If it will not work for lessons, you are refunded in full, no argument.

Confirmed

Once the pool checks out your lesson is locked in. Nothing else for you to do.

Confirmation and reminder

A confirmation lands right away with the address, time and what to bring. A reminder follows three days out.

Lesson day

We arrive with the gear. You bring towels, a swimsuit and a parent poolside. Afterwards you get a note on what was worked on and what comes next.

The one requirement

You need access to a pool. You do not need to own one.

This is the question that stops most people from asking, and it should not. Lessons regularly happen at apartment complex pools, neighborhood and HOA pools, gym pools, hotel pools and a friend or relative's backyard pool.

If you have somewhere in mind, name it on the request form and we will look into whether it works. If you are not sure, say that too and we will help you figure it out.

Tell us about your pool

What makes a pool workable

A shallow area a swimmer can stand in, a clean and clearly visible bottom, a safe entry such as steps or a zero-depth edge, and water warm enough for a lesson to be comfortable.

What we check before booking

Chelsea reviews depth markings, drain covers, deck condition, access rules and whether the property allows paid instruction. Some HOAs and complexes require permission first.

What we bring

Chelsea brings flotation aids, dive toys and instructional equipment. You bring towels, swimsuits, and a parent or guardian for anyone under 18.

Your instructor

Meet Chelsea Wiley

Safe Strides is Chelsea. She answers the email, checks the pool, and teaches every lesson herself. No rotating staff, no handing your child to someone new halfway through a session, no wondering who is going to show up.

Her rules are short. Nobody gets pushed past what they are ready for. Safety skills are taught alongside strokes rather than saved until after them. And a parent or guardian stays poolside for every lesson with a swimmer under 18, without exception.

  • Water Safety Instructor certified — trained specifically to teach swimming, not only to supervise it.
  • Lifeguard certified — current rescue and water surveillance training.
  • CPR certified — current.
  • 18+ years teaching — toddlers through adults, beginners through stroke refinement.
From families

What people say

From families across the Triangle.

"Nia would not go past the second step in June. By the fourth lesson with Chelsea she was jumping in and turning back to the wall on her own. I did not think that was possible in a month."

— Danielle R., Durham

"I am 41 and never learned to swim. Doing it at my own pool with nobody else around was the only way I was ever going to start. I swam a full length last week."

— Marcus T., Raleigh

"Both boys in one lesson and neither of them stood around waiting. Chelsea kept them moving the whole 45 minutes and they ask about it all week."

— Priya S., Cary

Request a lesson

About three minutes, and payment at the end to hold your time. Full refund if your pool turns out not to work.

About the swimmer

How comfortable is the swimmer in water right now?

Nothing here is unusual and none of it changes whether we can help.

Taken from the address you gave, so the travel fee is always right.

Which of these times work for you?

A lesson may be ended without refund if this requirement is not met.

8. Pool premises and permission

I/we represent that we own the pool where lessons will take place, or have obtained express permission from the owner, HOA, property manager or facility operator for paid swimming instruction to be conducted on the premises. I/we accept responsibility for the condition of the premises and for any claim brought by the property owner or operator relating to the lessons.

9. Photo and media release

Consent is optional and is recorded in the form below. It may be withdrawn at any time by written notice.

10. Cancellation and refund policy

I/we understand and agree to Safe Strides Swim Academy's cancellation and refund policy. Cancellations made with more than 72 hours' notice receive a full refund or a free reschedule. Cancellations with fewer than 72 hours' notice, and missed sessions without prior notice, are forfeited. Lessons cancelled by the instructor for weather or unsafe conditions receive a makeup credit. If the pool is found unsuitable for lessons, payment is refunded in full.

11. Severability and governing law

I/we agree that if any portion of this agreement is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect. This agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina.

Before your first lesson

Policies, and what to bring

Cancellation and refunds

  • More than 72 hours notice: full refund, or reschedule at no charge.
  • Less than 72 hours notice: the payment is forfeited.
  • No-show, or nobody at the pool on arrival: the payment is forfeited.
  • Weather or unsafe conditions: if the lesson is called off for lightning, storms, unsafe water temperature or poor water clarity, you receive a makeup credit toward a future lesson.
  • If we cancel for any other reason: full refund or a credit, whichever you prefer.
  • If your pool is not suitable: full refund. Payment is taken when you request a lesson, and Chelsea checks the pool afterwards. If it will not work, or the property will not permit lessons, you get every dollar back.
Weather calls are made by Chelsea about two hours before the lesson and sent by email. Lightning means everyone is out of the water, with no exceptions, for at least 30 minutes after the last strike.

What to bring

  • Towel, swimsuit and a water bottle
  • Sunscreen, applied about 20 minutes beforehand
  • Flip flops or pool shoes for the deck
  • Toddlers and children: a swim diaper plus a spare if not reliably potty trained, and a change of clothes
  • Teens and adults: goggles, and a swim cap for long hair
  • Goggles for children who already like wearing them

Flotation aids, dive toys and instructional equipment are provided.

What to expect

  • Be poolside and changed at the start time rather than arriving at it. Lessons end on time because of travel between clients.
  • A parent or guardian stays poolside, within sight and earshot, for the whole lesson for anyone under 18.
  • No food in the 30 minutes before a lesson.
  • Tell us about illness, ear infections or anything new before the lesson rather than at it.
  • Chelsea sends a short note afterwards on what was worked on and what comes next.

Waiver and safety

  • A waiver is signed at booking, before the first lesson. It covers assumption of risk, emergency medical authorization, the parent-poolside requirement, and permission to hold lessons at the pool.
  • If you do not own the pool, you are confirming that the owner, HOA or property manager permits paid instruction on the property.
  • A lesson may be ended, without refund, if the pool or the surrounding area is judged unsafe, or if a parent or guardian is not present for a swimmer under 18.
  • Photo and video permission is optional and can be withdrawn at any time.
